Davids’ Story
25/05/2026
The day I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder felt like the floor had vanished beneath me. One minute I was trying to live a normal life, the next I was facing a condition I barely understood. The symptoms were frightening, unpredictable, and isolating. Some days my body refused to cooperate. Other days my mind spiraled with frustration, fear, and the feeling that nobody truly understood what I was going through.
I felt lost in a storm that had no map and no clear ending. Then I found Stepping Stones.
What started as support slowly became something much bigger. Over the last two years, Stepping Stones gave me more than guidance; they gave me connection, purpose, and belief in myself again. They listened without judgement, supported me through difficult moments, and reminded me that even when life changes direction, it does not mean your story is over.
With their encouragement, I began rebuilding my confidence piece by piece. Eventually, I realised I wanted to give back in the same way others had helped me. Today, I volunteer within the organisation, helping support people who may feel the same fear and uncertainty I once did. I’ve taken part in fundraising efforts, helping raise awareness and support for mental health services that truly change lives.
One of the proudest parts of my journey has been facilitating a men’s mental health cohort group, creating a safe space where men can talk openly, honestly, and without shame. I also volunteer by doing peer-to-peer support work, using my lived experience to help others feel less alone.
FND changed my life, but Stepping Stones helped me find strength within it. What once felt like an ending became the beginning of purpose, community, and hope.
